Anette Decille 1, Made by Teleghost
Anette Decille 2, made by Willonaz
Anette Decille, I might as well start out with my favorite for this little project. This is the first part of a little writing project I have wanted to do for a while now, The different dimensions of various Dungeons and Dragons characters. Of course, Anette is a character I play, but I plan on trying this for characters of others, admittedly with a different spin. (Fingers crossed people actually read this)
A brief outline first, this will be written and uploaded in a number of parts, and the exact number as it stands now will vary with the character. However a basic idea is Background, Intentions/what happened, the story she plays a role in, the relationships she has formed with the characters she has been around and perhaps ideas moving forward.
Alas, Anette....Anette is a bizarre character to say the least in my eyes. There is perhaps more story about her behind the scenes than in the story itself, if not, damned close. Before I go into it however a brief lesson of the circumstances behind her. Anette is my character for a campaign run by a friend, a campaign which started out with a companion campaign. The initial idea was a "face" and a "heel" campaign (Face and heel being pro wrestling terminology for good/hero and bad/villain respectively) The idea of playing an evil character caught my interest immediately at the time, being new at the entire role playing thing I thought it would be fantastic for getting out of my comfort zone and getting more comfortable playing characters. I put all of my attention pre-campaign on that character. Akkis, was an Elven Rogue who was very demanding around women as well as a terrible drunk. he had a completely written back story going into his character and the like, up until then, by far my most pre-developed character.
The Heel Campaign included Akkis, a Human fighter and a Human sorcerer (to my recollection) all of which were male. and the Face campaign was then a Male Human Cleric, Female Human Monk and a Male Halfling Barbarian. I was told to make a character for it on the spot, because the time was drawing near to begin. I created a very simple, very fast and very thoughtless character and sheet. Quick rolls, no back story, and here is the kicker, her name was chosen for two reasons. A) I like the name Anette...hell I like many French feminine names and B) she was to be a joke...she was to be nothing more than a character with a horribly throw away gimmick of inserting French into her speech...in a world that has no French. As you could tell I really did not take her seriously. She had good stat rolls but nearly zero effort behind her.
With zero interest I started the first session of the "Face" campaign. The way it was planned out was that two people would start and the other two would join in later. This was the choice for two reasons, some attendance issues and a collective agreement that narrative should be taken seriously, and finding the rest of the party would give more room for character development than the "WE ALL KNOW EACH OTHER" approach, which I really dislike. So the Cleric (Clayrion Des Malyce) and Anette were the two who started, the scene was painted as such: we were in a small desert village and Clayrion was looking for the same player's Heel character, Vaulk...That was it, plain and simple. Anette was tagging along as a companion for no given reason...again I clearly gave as much effort as humanly possible...
As the session went on Clayrion (Played by Debby) and Anette showed an interesting, fun to act out and overall idea starting relationship. They were chummy and respectful, it was not some stupid immediate sexual tension filled relationship, nor was it a relationship all about sex, they were friends, that is how we acted it out, and that is when my brain went running. We fought our first encounter and gained a new level of back and forth and then finally hit the last encounter of the night and the last one before party members three and four joined. The First encounter was with a giant bird, in which Clayrion and Anette trusted each other enough to efficiently take down after some risky choices to take down the flying....cowardly bird. and the second was a storied battle we were meant to fail, we were to perish. We did of course because thou shall not piss off the Dungeon Master but before we did, Anette and Clayrion worked in tandem to strike down numerous undead and severely damaged a Lich, even to the point of what we believed was it's death. The Cleric did some risky things while the Fighter did her best to keep the swarm of death around them from getting to him as best she could. This interaction really got my head running as I began writing a character profile and back story for Anette....and without permission, partially for Clayrion....kinda really amazingly restricting for him, but Debby has since forgiven me. Though, as a final note, I would like to clarify...the Heel campaign lasted all of two sessions before interest was collectively lost...kinda funny how that works huh?
Anette Decille... in 4 hours of play, with a player opposite in which I was comfortable enough with to do my best RP'ing with up until then, made a character with no effort behind her, no ideas and no direction into a character who would soon have a back story and a purpose so important to herself she devoted her entire adult life to it....
